Wave11 and Nautilus

Planium installation at Fuorisalone 2022

In the context of Design Week 2022, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Planium s.r.l. in the realization of two extraordinary projects, Nautilus and Wave11. Both projects, although inspired by the visionary design of Maurizio Galante and Tal Lancman, took shape through my direction and the efforts of my team.

The Nautilus project consisted of a striking gallery clad in oxidized stainless steel, evoking the lunar surface through the application of detailed selenic maps. The gray tones of the steel, along with interior lighting designed with LED lights positioned like the ribs of a whale, created an atmosphere of striking beauty, transporting visitors inside a submerged wreck of a space vessel.

At the heart of this space wreck was Wave11. This installation, consisting of nearly 200 copper and brass foils, was the result of a meticulous oxidation process that my team and I experimented with. The shape, erosions and shades of each foil were designed to tell the story of an instant of transition, expressed through the Japanese concept of 'MU,' a moment so ephemeral that nothingness seems to become everything.

In parallel, I coordinated and supported the work of Işıl Çağatay, a promising member of my team. Together, we brought to life the MAVI Calypso Tapestries, oxidized copper and brass sheets that draw inspiration from the colors of the Mediterranean and the maps of our planet.

Nautilus and Wave11 were two important chapters in my creative journey, examples of how metal, through careful and innovative transformation, can be transformed into an expressive medium that can tell stories, arouse emotions and engage the audience in a unique experience. The metamorphosis of metal is not only a technical challenge, but also an artistic journey, a path that leads to exploring new expressive possibilities and experimenting with new techniques of creation.
